Ruben (ATP-98) has reached the semfinal of the European Open in Antwerp. He beat Portuguese Joao Sousa (ATP-61) after a heavy three set battle.
Ruben and his Portuguese opponent were equally matched in the first set. One break was fatal for Ruben and the set went to the Portuguese 4-6. In the second set, both players had two break points but a tiebreak had to bring the decision. The Portuguese made too much errors and Ruben took the set with 7-6(2).
In the third set Ruben managed to force a break. At 5-4 he could serve for the match but Sousa had five breakpoints. At the first matchpoint Ruben was able to conclude the match 6-4 and reached the semis. There he will face Julien Benneteau (ATP-93) or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (ATP-17) on Saturday at 14h. Virtually, Ruben is now 84th on the ATP ranking.
"I'm very satisfied, what I showed today was of a high and constant level. In the second set I played a little more aggressively, I remained calm and I'm happy with how I've taken the match. Mentally and physically it's going very well this week. I've been working hard the last weeks to get here in shape, and it's not finished here. It's nice to play so well in front of a home crowd", Ruben said after the match.
