Ruben stumbles in the second round Australian Open

Ruben (ATP-117) was not able to qualify for the third round of the Australian Open. The Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (ATP-61) was too strong in three sets.

Ruben could not repeat his great performance against Lucas Pouille (ATP-18) in the first round. However the Belgian played a strong first set. Only in the eleventh game Basilashvili was able to break Ruben's serve: 7-5.

In set two, Ruben was nowhere. He made too much unforced errors and also injured his right thigh. He was treated by a physiotherapist, but this did not help much: Basilashvili conquered the second set in 6-1. Ruben was hoping for a turnaround in set three, but he was broken again. Basilashvili won the set with 6-3.

"At the end of the first set, I started to suffer from my adductors, and in set two it only got worse," Ruben told Sporza afterwards. "The treatment did not help, I could barely rely on my right leg, I did play on, but that did not help." Too bad, because I felt that there was a lot more in. Fortunately, it is not a serious injury."

Ruben leaves Melbourne with his head up high. He won three qualifying matches and a first round on the main draw.
