Ruben loses tough battle at US Open

Ruben (ATP-128) was not able to reach the second round at the US Open. The Belgian, who was picked up as a 'lucky loser', lost in five sets to the Spaniard Jaume Munar (ATP-85).

Ruben had to compete for the first time in his career against the 21-year-old Munar. In the first set both players were equally matched, the set went to our compatriot with 7-5. In the second set Ruben was broken in the fifth game, he could not break back and lost the set 3-6. The third set was decided in the tiebreak, which went to Munar 6-7 (3).

After the third set, both players were allowed to pause for the heat, it was 36 degrees in the shadow and very humid in New York. Ruben took courage from the break and grabbed the fourth set with 6-2. In the fifth set, the heat became fatal to our compatriot, he lost the set with 1-6. The match lasted almost four hours.

Ruben was completely empty afterwards: "After the game I spent half an hour in the locker room without moving, I was completely empty. After the third set I could cool off in a cooler room and that gave me energy in the fourth set, but afterwards I was completely empty, I never felt like that before, maybe the tournament should be more reasonable in these circumstances".
