After Belgium fell 0-2 behind Bolivia after day one, the team managed to turn the situation around completely. Ruben (ATP-221) gave Belgium the 3-2 victory.
Under difficult circumstances, Ruben lost 6-3 and 6-4 in his first match against Hugo Dellien (ATP-144), the Bolivian number one. After a great remontada on day two, Ruben had to face Murkel Dellien (ATP-1332) in the decisive rubber. The Belgian faced a 2-5 deficit, but was able to turn the tide. Ruben raised his level and won the first set 7-5.
In the heavy heat, Dellien had to deal with cramps. Ruben went up 5-0 but his opponent still managed to put pressure on him. The Belgian managed to win the set with 6-2. Belgium qualifies for the play-offs for the Davis Cup finals in 2022.
Ruben was very happy and relieved afterwards: “At 2-5 I tried to raise my level and started playing more aggressively. I am happy that I can still experience this, that I was able to pull this match to us. At 2-2 I've never been able to prove myself in the past and this feels really good. The conditions were really brutal, 35 to 39 degrees and very humid. Once it got physical it was really a matter of who could control his cramps. The last games were very stressful, this was really pumping and not drowning.”
