Monfils too strong for Ruben at the European Open

In the last match on Tuesday at the European Open in Antwerp, Ruben (ATP-110) had to compete against French Gaël Monfils (ATP-38). The Belgian went down in two sets.

Ruben started the match nervously and was 0-5 behind in no time. The Limburger did not succeed in putting pressure on Monfils, and was not always lucky either. The Frenchman played almost error-free and the Belgian lost the first set after 20 minutes with 0-6.

At the start of set two Ruben found his rhythm and won his service game relatively easily for the first time. In the fifth game Ruben had a 0-30 advantage, and could force a breakpoint for the first time. Monfils served very strong and with a few aces he came back to 2-3. The Frenchman broke the service of 'Bemel', who broke back immediately. Unfortunately the Belgian again made more mistakes in his own service game, which allowed Monfils to lead 3-5. The second match point was a winner, Monfils won the match after 1 hour and 4 minutes with 0-6 and 3-6.

Ruben was disappointed afterwards: "Monfils started the match very well and I missed my start and couldn't find my rhythm. I was training well and was looking forward to my match, maybe there was a bit too much pressure from my semi-final last year. It's now a matter of finding my focus again".
