Ruben was born in Genk (Belgium) on January 14, 1988. He grew up in Maasmechelen (Belgium), where he still lives & started to play with the ball in Lanaken (Belgium). When he was 13 years old, he went to the 'Vlaamse Tennisvereniging' in Wilrijk (Belgium). Besides tennis, he likes to play golf or watch some dvd's. Ruben adores Italian food & the Belgian kitchen.

Ruben started to practice when he was 4 years old & became a professionel tennis player on his 18. His most memorable moments were the Davis Cup duels Australia vs. Belgium & Belgium vs. Spain, his second round on the ATP tournament of Bangkok against Rafael Nadal, who was number 1 at that moment & his qualification for Wimbledon in 2011. 2012 was the year he first year he reached a second round of a grand slam (Wimbledon). Together with Xavier Malisse (BEL) he won the ATP-doubles tournament of Los Angeles. In 2015 he reached the third round at the US Open, in 2017 he reached the third round of Wimbledon, after three victories in the qualification tournament. His best ATP-ranking was 84 (September 28, 2015) in singles & 128 (October 1, 2012) in doubles.
